General information 

There are two (2) types of visa to enter Portugal:

  • Schengen visas of short-stay
  • National long-term visas

Which visa suits each situation?

If you want to travel to Portugal for: tourism; family visit; business purposes, development of business contacts, meetings or medical treatments for less than ninety (90) days – must apply for a Schengen Visa.

If you intend to travel for periods longer than ninety (90) days, you can apply for a National Visa, which may be for Residence or Temporary Stay.

Initially, you will have to send an email to sconsular.islamabad@mne.pt mentioning the following details: name, telephone number and email address. Later you will be contacted for an appointment date.
Emails sent to islamabad@mne.pt with queries regarding the Consular Section (eg. appointments for visas, visa related matters, Portuguese passport, Portuguese Citizen card, legalization of documents, etc) will not be considered.

Schengen Visas

The Schengen Visa is an authorization issued by a Member State for the purpose of an airport stopover, transit or intention to stay for a short time in the territory of one or more Member States, allowing its holder to present himself at the external border, however, not guaranteed, the respective entry into the Schengen area, which will be decided by the border authorities on arrival.

At the border, you may be asked to prove the reason for your visit to the Schengen Area and the conditions of your stay, including accommodation and sufficient means of subsistence for your stay and return.

Deadlines for filing the application:

Applications must be submitted at least six (6) months in advance and at least fifteen (15) calendar days in individual and duly justified cases.

Deadlines for decision

The decision on applications is taken within 15 calendar days from the date of submission of an admissible application.

The decision period is 45 days, in individual cases and when it is necessary to carry out a more detailed examination of the application.

Visa application cancellation request

If you wish to cancel the visa application process and collect your passport, you must request the cancellation of your visa application by sending an email to sconsular.islamabad@mne.pt accompanied by a copy of the application receipt visa.

Cancelling the process does not result in a refund of the fees paid.

Visa Fees

For each visa application, a fee is paid, which refers only to the processing of the visa application and does not imply the issuance of a visa or refund of the amount charged in case of refusal.


The visa application is considered admissible after the current fee is charged.

The fees are as follow:

  • General fee is 80 euros;
  • Reduced fee is 40 euros for children from 6 and under 12 years old.

The following are exempt from paying fees:

  • Children under 6 years of age (at the date of delivery of the visa application);
  • Students and teachers when travelling on study or training trips;
  • Researchers travelling for the purpose of scientific research;
  • Representatives of non-profit organizations up to 25 years of age who participate in seminars, conferences, cultural sporting events organized by non-profit organizations;
  • Family members of nationals of EU or Swiss member states.

Schengen visas for family members of citizens of the European Union and Switzerland

The Visa Code and Community legislation provide for preferential treatment for certain family members of EU / Swiss citizens (including Portuguese), exempting them from paying and presenting certain documents.

Who is considered familiar for these purposes?

Only “family member” of the EU / Swiss citizen is considered to be:

  • The spouse or who lives with him / her in the facto union  (duly attested by presenting a copy of the marriage certificate or declaration, given by the Parish Council or the Consulate, who has lived in a the facto union for more than two (2) years );
  • Descendants under the age of 21 or (provenly) dependent – stepchildren are included as long as they are part of the household;
  • The ascendants (proof must be provided) dependents – parents and in-laws who are part of the household.

 Family members of nationals of EU or Swiss member states are exempt from paying fees.

National Visas

National visas are intended for people who are going to travel to Portugal for periods exceeding ninety (90) days. There are two types:

  • Temporary Stay Visa
  • Residence Visas

  • Residence Visa – 90 euros;
  • Temporary Stay Visa – 75 euros.
